How To Avoid getting into Credit Card Debt
One reason many people end up being overwhelmed by credit card debts is simply because they didn't learn the right way to use a credit card. Another reason is that they were not taught the difference between good debt and bad debt. Ask yourself this question?
"Is my credit card debt good debt or bad debt?"
If you don't know the answer to that question chances are it's bad debt AND you are using your cards incorrectly. Most people treat credit cards like a long term loan, which they are not. The best way to treat credit cards actually depends on your goal. Your approach will differ if you are:
- Planning to build credit
- Planning to increase your score
- Planning to increase your limits, or
- Planning to get out of debt
Of course if you are using the cards because you are short of cash that's a different story altogether.
So we come back to the topic of this section, how to avoid getting into credit card debt. The obvious answer is not to use credit cards period. But that's a less than desireable solution, if it works for you though, by all means go ahead and use it.
If you are like most people you need to have a credit card because it helps when you are going on vacation to pay for cars, hotels, etc. It also provides some amount of protection if you're purchasing items online and you don't want to give merchants access to your checking account.
Avoiding credit cards debt then does not necessarily mean you shouldn't have a credit card, it could mean not using the card to get into long term debt. The easiest way to do this is just to treat it like a payday loan (without the interest) and pay your balance in full when you get the bill. This works well if you are just carrying a credit card for the convenience and your plans do not include any of those listed above.
If your plans do include any of those listed above you should first realize that credit card debt is a tool just like a saw, screwdriver or hammer. And you can use this kind of debt to build things. One of the things you can build with credit card debt is good credit. Another is wealth. But first you must learn to use debt properly.
One aim of The Debt Reduction Club is to teach you how to use debt properly. |
